SCHOLARSHIP
The Shyolanda Brown Family Foundation Scholarship is an undergraduate scholarship program available to one of Denver metro-area’s exceptional, African-American high school student athletes with financial need seeking to attend a 4-year college or university.
Brown Scholars receive $1,500 per year for 4 years, at total of $6,000.

2021 Scholarship Recipient
Milan Richman, a graduate of Overland High School, currently attending Colorado State University, majoring in veterinary medicine, was chosen in May 2021 as the first recipient of the Shyolanda Brown Family Foundation scholarship. Milan was a Varsity Diver and Gymnast throughout her high school tenure.
Eligibility Requirements
One scholarship is available, on a competitive basis according to the following requirements:

An African-American, Varsity student-athlete in their senior year of high school.

US Citizen or Permanent Legal Resident and must live within 50 miles of the Denver metro-area.

A plan to enroll as a full-time student in an accredited, not-for-profit, 4-year college or university in the US for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Minimum cumulative, unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale or its equivalent) through the last completed school term.

Complete FAFSA or state-based financial aid application (if applicable).

2022 Scholarship Recipient
Melaku Saketa, a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, currently attending University of Denver, majoring in Engineering, was chosen in May 2022 as the second recipient of the Shyolanda Brown Family Foundation scholarship. Melaku participated in Soccer and Track & Field throughout his high school tenure.


Instructions to Apply
Applications will be available online by clicking the button below, starting February 22, 2023. As part of your application, students will be required to submit the following materials:

Full high school transcript

3 letters of recommendation from persons unrelated to the student.

A 1-page personal statement (at least 500 words) answering the following questions:

What impact has sports had on your life?
-
How will this scholarship help you?
-
What legacy do you hope to leave?
-

Your Student Aid Report (SAR). You can obtain your SAR by filling out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if you haven't already done so, at www.fafsa.gov.
Important deadlines and information to note

Completed applications, with all materials requested, must be received by April 23, 2023.

All letters of recommendation must be received by April 23, 2023.

Applications will not be considered completed until these are submitted.

Applications submitted past the deadline will not be considered.

Incomplete or incorrect statements and information may directly impact any consideration of your scholarship application.

The top 3-4 candidates will be interviewed.

The final approval of an award will be made sometime in May.
